The Meatless Monday nationwide movement was formed to encourage people to cut out dietary meat intake for at least one day per week. The goal of this movement is to promote better healthy through responsible dieting.

Why Meatless

An initiative of The Monday Campaigns (in association with John Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health), the Meatless Monday movement aims to reduce consumption of meat by at least 15% in order to boost health.

The production of meat and its related products has had a significant impact on our environment. For instance, to produce a quarter-pound of hamburger, 1306 Btus of fossil fuel energy, and 52.8 gallons of water are required. That means by skipping a single hamburger, you’ve had a significant impact on the environment. There’s all this talk about reducing the carbon footprint. Going meatless is one surefire way of making your contribution.

How Much Meat are you Eating?

On average, Americans are eating about 50% more meat that the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake). The irony of it is that we are eating under half the RDI for vegetables and fruits. We are overdosing on meat.

Multiple studies have established a link between meat consumption and heart ailments. A meat-laden diet increases the risk of stroke, heart disease and obesity. Red meat is the #1 dangerous culprit when it comes to meat.

Another recent study established that, on average, vegetarians are 12% less likely to die compared to meat eaters. The CDC also recommends that diets rich in vegetables and fruits may help reduce risk of cancer, and many other chronic illnesses. This should be enough motivation for you to include more vegetables and fruits in your daily dieting routine.
